Dr. Schwanke is a Colorado native who moved to San Francisco in l973 to complete his pediatric training at UCSF where he graduated from the primary care pediatric program in 1976. He obtained his MD degree from the University of Chicago (Pritzker School of Medicine) in 1973. He is also a graduate of Colorado College (BA English l969).
Dr. Schwanke founded Noe Valley Pediatrics in l977 and has since continuously practiced at our current location. He has been board certified in pediatrics since l978. He has special interest in nutrition, asthma, infectious disease, complementary medicine and child development, but claims no specialized training in those areas.
Dr. Schwanke has basic familiarity with Spanish and at one time was fluent in German (sadly much less so today).
He enjoys gardening, travel (especially in Latin America and Hawaii), classical music, good food and wine. He and his wife Cecile Schwanke (who is a psychiatric nursing administrator at SFGH) reside in Bernal Heights have two daughters Theresa (a first year medical student at Cornell-Weil) and Maria (an enrolling freshman at NYU). Both daughters attended the San Francisco School and the International High School of FAIS. (this information last updated May of 2010)
Dr. Schwanke's daughter is currently a senior at NYU and other a recent,graduate of Cornell Medical school. Now in ENT residency at Cornell -Columbia in NYC.

Dr. Kaplan has been a presence at Noe Valley Pediatrics since completing residency in the mid 1990s.
She is originally from New York and attended Skidmore College (BA in Psychology and Biology). After completing medical school at The Sackler School of Medicine/New York State American Program at Tel Aviv University she landed in San Francisco for Pediatric Residency at CPMC and has not left.
Dr. Kaplan is a Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She has been a hospital based instructor for Neonatal Advanced Life Support and has had extensive experience as a critical care neonatal hospitalist working with the San Francisco Neonatology Medical group of California Pacific Medical Center-(aka Pediatrix Medical Group). In addition she was a critical care transport physician and emergency room physician and has worked as a general pediatrician in other San Francisco pediatric settings.
She is well versed in providing care for NICU graduates and growing preterm infants with and without medical issues. As She no longer work as a neonatal hospitalist she has been a full time presence with Noe Valley Pediatrics since 2010.
Dr. Kaplan also is a volunteer preceptor to second year medical students in Pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine.
She sees herself as a partner in parenting, practicing evidence based care and is a proponent of vaccines as prevention. In her general approach with families, she enjoys getting to know families and personalizing care as a parents perspectives on family, preventive care and child rearing unfold. One might consider that "reality based pediatrics" could describe her approach to care as an experienced physician and parent.
Dr. Kaplan is currently living in Mill Valley with her husband, David, son, Daniel and pooch named Otto.
Dr. Anne is a California native and she moved to San Francisco in 2000 after completing residency at Loma Linda University Children's Hospital. She graduated from Union College (BS in biology/sociology 1994) and obtained her MD from Albany Medical College in 1997.
Dr. Anne is a board certified Pediatrician and joined Noe Valley Pediatrics in 2001. Prior to working full-time at Noe Valley Pediatrics, she worked as a hospitalist at Kaiser and CPMC specializing in newborn care.
Dr. Anne sees herself as a educator in her approach to practicing pediatrics. She is interested in child development, nutrition, and preventive medicine. She volunteers yearly with Rotaplast International, a group of doctors/nurses who travel to foreign countries to correct cleft lip/palate and other congenital anomalies in children. She has travelled to South America and India with this volunteer group In her free time, she enjoys cooking, painting, and travel. She is married and lives in San Francisco with her husband, Sri.

Dr. Hurd is a Hawaii native. She left the islands after high school to attend Stanford University where she received a BA in Human Biology. She obtained her MD from the University of Washington School of Medicine and then returned to the bay area to complete residency at Oakland Children's Hospital.
Dr. Hurd is a board certified Pediatrician and a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. She joined Noe Valley Pediatrics in 2011 after working at Kaiser as an outpatient Pediatrician. She has a special interest in nutrition, asthma, and preventative medicine. She also enjoys international medicine and has traveled to Africa, Australia, Southeast Asia, and Central and South America for medical work. She volunteers with Operation Smile, a group of doctors and nurses who travel to foreign countries to correct cleft lip/palate and other congenital anomalies in children. In her free time she enjoys dancing, cooking, traveling, and spending time with her twin maltese puppies.
